Yvonne M. Gandy

Yvonne M. Gandy, 90, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024, at her Ottawa Hills home. Yvonne was born March 5, 1934, to Margaret Baker McGoodwin and Sully Bruce (Mac) McGoodwin in Gallipolis, Ohio. Her family later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she graduated from Glenville High School and attended Nursing School at City Hospital in Cleveland and The University of Toledo.

In 1952 while she was at City Hospital, Yvonne met and married the love of her life, lifelong friend, confidant, and companion Roland Gandy, Jr., MD, who was doing his surgery internship. In 1955, Yvonne and Roland moved to Toledo, Ohio. She was Roland’s office manager and bookkeeper. In addition, she was a wonderful mother to her two children, Roland Gandy III and Robyn. She was a surrogate mom to many. Yvonne was an active member of the community. She was a charter member of the Toledo Chapter of Girlfriends. Yvonne served as National Treasurer for The Girl Friends®, Inc. from 1986 – 1988 and National Budget Chairperson from 1992 -1994.

Yvonne played basketball in high school and was an avid basketball fan. There was not a year that would go by that you would not see Yvonne caught up in March Madness. Yvonne loved traveling and supporting Roland who was team doctor for the University of Toledo basketball and football teams for 37 years. After Roland passed away, she continued to regularly attend the University of Toledo basketball games. Yvonne also loved to travel to Las Vegas with her friends, “the Golden Girls” and with her family.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband, Roland and her parents, Margaret and Mac. She is survived by her son, Roland (Butch) Gandy III; daughter, Robyn Gandy; and grandson, Maceo Gandy.

The family would like to thank all of her wonderful caregivers for their kindhearted assistance and compassion in Yvonne’s time of need. Thank you - Alisha, Beth, Cheryl, Darla, Debbie, Gina, Jamie, Jessica, Kimmie, Linda, The Area Office of Aging (Tracie, Jessica, Arcelia, and Jennifer) and the entire Hospice crew. We also thank the Ottawa Hills Police Department and the Ottawa Hills/Toledo EMS Crews. Special thanks to friends Barry, Denise, Hale, Harriet, Lanyine, and Mary. Without everyone’s help it would not have been possible for us to honor our mother’s wishes to stay in her home. If we forgot to name someone that played such an integral part in her care, please forgive us. We are forever grateful for all of the love and support you gave her.
