William G. Humphrey

December 16, 1931 — July 1, 2021

William G. Humphrey (89) of Maumee, Ohio passed away peacefully on July 1, 2021 at Hospice of NW Ohio. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 16th, 1931 and was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Mary Ellen Humphrey. Bill was the son of Donald and Helene (Moo) Humphrey and grew up in Toledo, graduating from DeVilbiss High School in 1949. After high school Bill moved on to Georgia Tech where he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. While in college, Bill was a member of the ROTC and graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1953. He then served in the USAF as a fighter pilot for an additional three years. He married Mary Ellen Sweeney in June of 1958. Bill spent his entire career at Owens Illinois, starting in the Libbey division and achieving the title of Plant Engineer at the age of 29. He ended his career in 1986 when he retired from OI as the Director of Engineering. Bill had an amazing career throughout his years at OI and was very grateful to the large number of people he felt were instrumental to his success. Much credit was given to his long-time secretary, Pat Burkart, who he believed was “essential to reaching his goals”. Bill spent his retirement years golfing, sailing, assembling an entire N-Gauge railroad city and building many Chris Craft model boats. Bill always felt he had a great life and was very grateful to his wonderful parents, his amazing wife and his two loving children. Much appreciation and pride came from his excellent education, (GT) and earning his jet fighter pilot wings. He was very proud to have served his country and that he got to fly “really fast planes!” Bill is survived by his daughter Jenny (Craig) Olson of Peyton, CO and his son Scott (Jennifer King) Humphrey of Toledo, Ohio.. He was extremely proud of his two granddaughters Amanda (Alex) Wyno and Lindsay (Oleg) Pertsov and thankful he lived long enough to know and love his two great granddaughters Avianna and Maggie Ellen Pertsov. A small family memorial will be held in the near future followed by his internment at Fort Meigs cemetery in Perrysburg. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in his name to Hospice of NW Ohio.
