William Frederick Caldwell8/29/24 6/23/10 William Frederick Caldwell, age 85, Toledo OH, died on June 23, 2010 at 3:12pm. Bill was born on August 29, 1924, in Buffalo NY to Vernon G. and Dorothy F. (Sullivan) Caldwell. Bill graduated from Hutchinson Central Technical high school and attended Saint Lawrence, Harvard and Columbia Universities for officer training prior to enlisting in the Navy in 1943. He proudly served during WWII until 1946. He continued to serve as captain in the US Naval Reserve for almost two decades. He graduated magna cum laude with a BS, Forestry from Syracuse University in 1948. Bill joined the family business, T. Sullivan Lumber Company, Buffalo NY, and rose to the position of vice president and sales manager; later officer and director. He became involved in construction and land development through his association with local builders who were customers. He initially founded William F. Caldwell and Associates, in 1963, in Williamsville, NY, as a residential land development company. It later diversified into every phase of the real estate and expanded into apartments, condos, planned unit developments (PUD) and multi-use commercial real complexes. Over 30 years, he also founded Caldwell Development Corporation, Caldwell American Investments, Caldwell Equity Corporation, which was headquartered in Troy MI. He developed major land development projects in many cities in the northeast, southeast and midwest. A few of his successful developments include Ransom Oaks, Amherst NY, Rainbow Center, Niagara Falls NY, Ottawa Place, Pontiac MI, Harbortown, Detroit MI, luxury housing in Grosse Pointe MI, Park East, Milwaukee WI, Garfield Place, Cincinnati OH, the Crescent Centre, Louisville KY, a large office building in Washington, DC, Park Place, Bethesda MD, the Moorings and Windward Point on Estero Island, Fort Meyers FL.Bill was past president Urban Land Institute, and of Buffalo Home Show Corporation, past vice president NY State Home Builders Association, and Buffalo Lumber Exchange, and served as director and officer of the Niagara Frontier Builders Association.Bill was honored for 16 consecutive years as a Building Giant by Professional Builder magazine. Architectural design awards from Architectural Record and Better Homes and Gardens were received for his corporations Georgetown Square Shopping Center in Amherst, NY, for Shoreline Apartments, on the Buffalo, NY waterfront, and for the Fairlane Woods condominium development, Dearborn MI.Bills number one passion was being a successful entrepreneur; he loved making deals and creating quality residential and commercial real estate. He also enjoyed fishing, golf, skiing, travel, and the Buffalo Bills; more recently he was an avid novel reader and ate chocolate cake for lunch every day. He was always dapper, meticulous and ever the gentleman.Bill is predeceased by his parents and sister, Marie Joyce (New Orleans LA).Bill is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Juanita (Hall) (Toledo OH); his children, Susan Caldwell (Brazil), Steven Caldwell (Romania), Sandra Caldwell (Nancy Newbold) (Redwood City CA) and their mother, Constance Watson (Prescott AZ); step-children, Carol (Alan) Dills (Maumee OH), Janet (Tim) Holt (Belzoni MS), Jennifer Jacoby (Concord MA), William (Lori) LaJeunesse (Malibu CA), 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.Bills remains will be interred at Calvary Cemetery, Toledo OH.
