Thomas Frank Martone, 81, of Toledo, Ohio transitioned from this life on April 1, 2021. Tom was born in 1940 in Youngstown, Ohio. Tom grew up in Buffalo, NY, where he was an outstanding athlete and scholar at Canisius High School. He went on to receive degrees in Architecture from the University of Detroit, and Urban Planning from Wayne State University. Tom designed buildings that touched many aspects of human life: schools, medical facilities, theatres, libraries, restaurants, and housing. As an independent contractor, Tom also built many examples of innovative housing in the Ann Arbor area. He volunteered his services as a docent for The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio and The Chicago Architecture Foundation. He used his ingenious skills to design artful sets for theatre companies. Tom enjoyed all forms of visual art, theatre, literature, and music. He was passionate about traveling and seeing the world, with his wife and children. Those fortunate enough to know Tom, benefitted from his brilliant intellect, his problem-solving skills, his ability to create beauty, his integrity, trenchant humor and gourmet cooking. In 1985, Tom and Fran (Gerken Foster) married each other, thus beginning their nearly 36-year journey of love, growth, and adventure. Tom is survived by his cherished wife, Fran, his three beloved children (Norah Martone, Matthew Martone and Hillary Olsen) five grandchildren and a number of supportive, loving siblings-in-law. A gathering celebrating Tom’s life will be held later this spring. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or The Toledo Museum of Art.
