Thomas Michael Tom Hage

Tom Hage left this world, his friends and family suddenly on July 21, 2020, at 65 years of age. A lifelong West Toledo resident, he was born August 14, 1954, to Mary and Al Hage, the youngest of four children. He graduated from Blessed Sacrament Elementary School, St. Francis de Sales High School and the University of Toledo, where he was the sports editor for the Collegian campus newspaper. As an avid photographer, he became an even more valuable reporter covering MAC / UT sporting events. Tom enjoyed sports both on and off the field, participating in basketball and softball intramural contests at UT as well as CYA and federation softball leagues after college. He always supported his Toledo area sports teams… the Rockets, Goaldiggers / Walleyes and Mudhens and cheered on the Buckeye football teams every year. After college, Tom worked at the General Mills production plant for 27 years. Outside of work, music and live stage performing became Tom’s true loves over the years. He honed his skills as a singer and guitar player with the Gesu parish liturgical folk group, at Exercise in Christian Living retreats and masses and in Jubilation, a Christian folk band. He went on to join his brother Chuck on stage at Toledo downtown festival events singing popular folk style music. Eventually, he was bitten by the live theater bug. He loved the Westgate dinner theater, the REP, the Village Players, and all the Toledo area community theater groups. During a period spanning 35 years, he was a player in more than a hundred musical comedy performances, singing, dancing and making people laugh. Tom was an enormous supporter of his two nieces, Emily and Julia, who always made him very proud. He followed their musical performances from their years in Sylvania School bands through the BGSU Falcon Marching Band and Center for Musical Arts concerts, back to Sylvania’s high school marching bands as music educators. In recent years, he also joined the cast of Corny Beef and Cabaret, a comedy troupe with an Irish flair, whose hilarious, sometimes naughty, skits, jokes and songs left crowds laughing all the way home. He became a big fan of Irish music, especially his favorite group, Cleveland area’s Brigid’s Cross. His yearly winter stays in Florida afforded him ample opportunities to enjoy Brigid’s Cross at their winter home, The Bridgetender. Tom also was a devout Catholic who attended Blessed Sacrament church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Ministry and the adult choir for more than 30 years. Tom was preceded in death by both parents, Mary and Al, his brother John and his sister Mary Lou. Surviving are his brother, Chuck (Elisa Huss-Hage), nieces, Emily (Justin) and Julia Hage-Welsh (Brandon), and his dear cousin & “sister”, Moira Kenny, RSM. His life was blessed with a large group of good friends whom he considered his extended family… (you know who you are!!!) who also remain to cherish Tom’s memory – Cheers! Family visitation and a memorial celebration will be planned as Covid 19 restrictions allow in the future.
