Toledo

Thomas Douglas Ball, affectionately known as Doug, passed away peacefully Nov. 16, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, music, and love.

Born on March 9, 1943 and raised in Ewing, Virginia, Doug was the son of Curtis and Lucille (Hoskins) Ball and grew up alongside his three brothers: Harry “Ronnie” (Ocie), Wilburn, and John “Greg” (Peggy). From an early age, Doug’s life was shaped by hard work, deep family bonds, and a love for the open road and heartfelt melodies.

After graduating from Thomas Walker High School, Doug proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, he strengthened his sense of duty, resilience, and dedication—qualities that would guide him throughout his life and he would pass on to his sons who all also served in the military.

Following his military service, Doug settled in Michigan and married his former wife, Cynthia, where together they built a loving family. Doug was the proud father of three sons:

Steve of Dundee, MI

Jeff (Kathy) of Sylvania, OH

Mike (Lori) of Key West, FL

He was blessed with 12 grandchildren: Richard (Tipsuda), Tatiana (Kyle), Joslyn, Avery, Jessica (Kyle), Owen (Jordan), Kailey (Jared), Hannah (Connor), Nathan, Dakota (Sydney), Taylor (Austin), and Tristan (Bryce). His joy multiplied even further with 11 great-grandchildren: Emrynn, Bexley, Lennox, Colton, Zoey, Molly, Jackson, Lyla, River, Bentlee, and Stoney.

Doug worked for several years at GM Fisher Body in Adrian before pursuing his true calling as an over-the-road truck driver. After purchasing his first big rig he embraced the freedom of the highways, seeing the beauty of our country mile by mile through his windshield.

Music—especially the guitar—was the constant soundtrack of Doug’s life. He played and sang throughout his lifetime in churches, as part of “The Virginians” house band at Holland’s Homestead in Waldron, MI, and in many VFW halls along the way. His music filled family gatherings with warmth and joy, and it was a true reflection of his loving and spirited heart.

Doug will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to a veterans’ organization of your choice. He will be laid to rest in his family cemetery in Tennessee.

Rest in peace, Doug—Dad. Your song will live on in our hearts forever.
