Sue Ellen Wells, age 79, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, at Toledo Hospital, surrounded by those she loved. In true Sue fashion, she chose to go out with fireworks — literally — on Independence Day.
Born in Brazil, Indiana, on October 4, 1945, Sue was the daughter of Rosemary and Donald Pyles. She graduated from Devilbiss High School in 1963 — a fact she was very proud of — and later earned an Associate’s Degree from Davis College. She built a career first as an administrative assistant and then as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
She was the loving and often hilarious mother of Donald Barto, Roger Barto, Tracy Harmon, Jamie Peterson, Andy Barto, and Kelly Walczuk. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life — and the subjects of many proud stories, jokes, and lovingly sarcastic remarks. Her many grandchildren adored their Grandma Sue.
She married the love of her life, Willis "Bill" Wells, and together they shared many joyful years. The couple was married in a small, meaningful ceremony that marked the beginning of a life rooted in love and partnership. The two often agreed on everything except college sports — she was a loyal Michigan Wolverines fan, which Bill tolerated… barely. She also rooted hard for the Indianapolis Colts every fall, coaching loudly from home as though they could hear her through the TV. Through her marriage with Bill, Sue also gained two bonus daughters, Amber and Cynthia Wells.
Sue had a quick wit, a big heart, and a personality that filled every room she entered. Whether it was cheering for her football teams, chatting over Cherry Coke, or sharing stories about Indy car racers, she brought joy and just the right amount of attitude to everyday life. Sue loved her animals deeply, especially her dog Winnie, who she continued to call and talk to when they couldn’t be together (and yes, Winnie talked back).
She was a longtime resident of Toledo, though she always carried fond memories of her years in Rhode Island. Sue was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Mary’s Church until its closing. Her faith was strong — but so was her personality. If you met her once, you remembered her forever.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Rosemary and Donald; her brother, Donald Pyles; her sister, Marcella Weaver; and her son-in-law, Mike Harmon. She leaves behind her loving husband, Willis; her children and their significant others, her many beloved grandchildren, and her loyal dog Winnie and Ralph the cat.
A visitation will take place at 10:00 a.m. on August 8, 2025, at St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church in Toledo, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Sister Virginia Welsh, OSF. A luncheon will follow. To honor Sue’s love for football, those attending are encouraged to dress casually and in the sports attire from their favorite team.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lucas County Canine Care and Control, a cause dear to Sue’s animal-loving heart.
She was fierce, funny, faith-filled, and never afraid to speak her mind. Sue’s stories, love, and laughter will live on in the many people — and pets — lucky enough to have known her. Heaven just gained one unforgettable woman.
