When the world needs kindness, it lost some on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 with the passing of Steven J. Weiss, 83, of Sylvania. He was born May 29, 1939 in Denver, CO to Frederick and Jean (Kahn) Weiss who predeceased him.
He earned a BA and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Colorado. He was a professor of Economics at the University of Toledo for 30 years, retiring in 1999.
Steve will be remembered for many things. He was the guy who walked his dogs in the middle of the night in his Old Orchard neighborhood, drank coffee with friends at Barry Bagels in old Westgate and other places, and rode his bicycle all over Sylvania.
He served the community in many ways. He supported the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Metroparks, and other organizations and causes. He began as a tutor and eventually served on the board of Read for Literacy. He was a member of the boards of Jewish Senior Services and Darlington House. He was a past president of Pelham Manor and Jewish Family Services.
He is survived by Mary, his wife of 56 years; son, Adam; niece, Lisa Escalante; nephew, Robert Cohen; as well as 3 great-nieces; and a great-nephew. His daughter, Sarah; and niece, Alison Williams, predeceased him.
There will be a time to celebrate Steve's life on Friday, September 30, 2022 from 2:30-5:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 325 N. Michigan St.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Read for Literacy, Library Literacy Foundation, or SeaGate Food Bank.
