Stephen P. Ashton

Stephen P. Ashton, 74, recently of Maumee, Ohio, passed away on August 16, 2023, at Ebeid Hospice Residence, in Sylvania, Ohio.

Steve was born in Youngstown, Ohio, son of Thomas R. and Elizabeth (Powers) Ashton, on November 12, 1948. Along with his brothers, Thomas “Rob”, James, and sister, Nancy, the family moved to Gambier, Ohio, where their father attended seminary at Kenyon College. Rev. Ashton became rector at Trinity Episcopal Church, in Findlay, Ohio, in 1958. Steve met his wife Cynthia (Kifer) Ashton, in Findlay, and the high school sweethearts have been inseparable since. They married at Trinity Episcopal, in 1971, with Rev. Ashton presiding.

Steve attended Oberlin College and had two careers: one in education and one in sales. Steve and Cindy moved to Lorain, Ohio, for work in 1972, where they raised two sons; Jonathan, and James. Steve retired from his sales career in 2014. Steve and Cindy attended the Church of the Redeemer in Lorain, Ohio, where Steve served several times on Vestry, and loved to sing in the choir with his wife and sons.

Steve was an avid reader, follower of current events, and a huge Cleveland sports fan. More than anything, though, he loved his wife, sons, and his four granddaughters: Bianca (15), Julianna (9), Abigail (7), and Caroline (5). Steve and Cindy travelled the globe to visit with SMSgt James (USAF) and his family—wife Telma and daughters Bianca and Julianna. They recently relocated to Maumee, Ohio, to be near Jonathan and his family—wife Ana (Tindall) and daughters, Abigail, and Caroline.

Steve was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Rob, and James. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 53 years, his sons, his sister, and of course, his beloved granddaughters.

Services for Steve will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Maumee, Ohio, on August 26, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Second Harvest Food Bank of Lorain, Ohio or Under One Roof Pantry in Maumee, Ohio.
