Skylar Kunz

November 3, 2002 — November 2, 2025

Toledo

Skylar “Sky” Nicole Kunz, age 22, passed away on November 2, 2025, after facing leukemia with incredible strength and an unbreakable spirit.

Born on November 3, 2002, in Toledo, Ohio, Sky grew up with a creative heart and a deep appreciation for the world around her. In grade school, during lunch Sky would sell her drawings to those who wanted them, she would always come home with her lunch box full of quarters! Sky had her artwork displayed at The Toledo Museum of Art show and won BCSN Next Generation Artist Award in 2020. A 2022 graduate of Whitmer High School, she ran cross country, embracing the endurance and focus it required — qualities she carried with her throughout her life.

Sky worked at Advanced Incentives, where she found joy in embroidery — work that reflected her artistic soul. Whether she was painting, sculpting, or turning newly found trinkets into art, Sky saw beauty in everything. On family vacations, she loved walking the beach at sunset, searching for shark teeth and seashells to use in her creations.

Being in nature and digging in the dirt was like a second home to Sky. She held respect for all beings of nature — whether it had fur, feathers, or scales. Every life held meaning and was deserving of love and care.

She was a kind soul with a dark sense of humor and quick wit that carried her and those around her through the hardest times. Her favorite things included whittling wood, being with friends and family, napping with a blanket over her head, playing Minecraft, anime, and watching her favorite shows, South Park and Family Guy.

Sky’s courage, creativity, and compassion will live on in every life she touched and every piece of art she left behind. She felt very strongly on what she believed in and was a fierce advocate for herself as well. Sky never let her cancer define her. She went above and beyond her limits to reach what she wanted and never gave up hope. She was an inspiration and hero to many.

Skylar is survived by her parents, Robert (Angeline) Kunz and Stacy (Scott) McGrew; siblings, Jillian, Scotty, Zachary, Mickayla, and Jaden; grandfather, Steven (Diana Turner) Kosinski; grandmother, Sue McGrew; soulmate, Danielle Block; and forever friend Kaytlyn Vasquez, her beloved pets, Tobias the toad, Moxie the crested gecko, Juju the corn snake, dogs Bella and Bailey, cats Sassy, Ricky and Aurora, and several snails. Several loving aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by many loving great grandparents, grandparents and childhood friend, Mady.

Skylar’s family extends a very special thanks to University of Michigan’s Bone Marrow Transplant Team, 7 East Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses who loved her as their own, and Techs, Infusion Team Nurses and Medical assistants who also loved her, and PICU for their continued support and care throughout the years. In addition, a deeply heartfelt thank you to Sky's bone marrow doctor, Dr. Mark Vander Lugt who made sure her voice and wishes were always a priority, as well as Sky’s bone marrow donor, Ellie, who made a profound difference, not only once but twice, in her fight against leukemia.
