Shirley Ann Montague

d. May 25, 2011

Shirley Ann Montague, age 81, passed away peacefully the morning of Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Shirley, the daughter of Gordon and Rose Holder of Toledo, OH, graduated from Waite High School in 1947 and the University of Toledo in 1951 with a Bachelors of Education. She went on to serve as a fifth-grade teacher at Navarre Elementary School for 34 years and on many occasions taught the children of her first students. During this time, Shirley served as both the Union representative and Teacher-in-Charge. More than just a teacher, Shirley served as a mentor to many people inside and outside of the classroom. She was an avid reader, a gardener, and a committed friend. Two things that were sure to bring joy to her friends and family were her contagious laugh and her famous spaghetti and meatball Sunday dinners. Shirley was generous to a fault, collecting over 10,000 return address labels from various charitable organizations around the world. Her six grandsons were the loves of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Gordon and Rendal Holder, and her sister Donna Henderly. Shirley is survived by her brother James Holder, her sons Michael (Janice) Montague and James (Michele) Montague, her grandsons Michael, Daniel, Evan, Taylor, Adam, and Ian Montague, her dear friends, Joey Lynne Lengel, Jane Welborn, and Sara Welborn. The family will be celebrating her outstanding life at a private ceremony on Friday. Memorial donations can be made to Mercy St. Charless Hospital Heart Failure Clinic.
