Russell D. Varner, age 82, passed away on January 1, 2025, at Flower Hospital, Toledo, Ohio, with family. He was born February 5, 1942, Toledo, to Eugene and Evelyn (Bachelor) Varner.
“Russ” is survived by children, Debra (Keith) Drew, Denise (Greg) Trelfa and Dale Varner; grandchildren, Crystal (Will) Carter, Clayton and Candice Drew; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Mason, Jayden, Ayden and Alexander; He was preceded in death by wife, Starr (Mullins) Varner; his parents; and brothers, Raymond and Ronald Varner. He also enjoyed close family ties with the “Mullins extended family.”
Russ graduated from Woodward High School in 1960 and was their football team’s running back. A local newspaper said he “ran like a deer.” An all-around athlete, he also enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, as well as bowling and playing pool. His fondest childhood memory, in his words, was having “hit 2 home runs and stole a base, scoring 3 runs in his church’s championship baseball game.”
Russ retired from GM Powertrain, with 38 years culminating as a quality control inspector. He was a dedicated employee and took great pride in his work. He was a valued employee.
Russ was a beloved and devoted husband and father. He loved fishing and caught his share of walleye. His greatest passion was cheering on the Ohio State Buckeye football team. He was a good man and enjoyed helping those less fortunate.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later time.
