Ronald Samuel Shapiro, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.P., of Toledo, Ohio, passed away September 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted physician, educator, innovator, and father, Ron dedicated his life to helping others—both through groundbreaking medical work and through the compassion he showed every person he met. He greeted everyone with a genuine smile you could see, hear and feel.

Born to Harold and Zelma (Nathanson) Shapiro, Ron grew up in Ottawa Hills and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School. He went on to earn his medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1965, later completing his residency at Maumee Valley Hospital. He also served as an active-duty physician in the United States Army, applying his medical expertise in service to his country. His early career included 11 years on the full‑time faculty of the Medical College of Ohio, where he developed The Total Renal Care Unit, directed dialysis services, established a Tissue Typing Laboratory, and—together with kidney transplant surgeons—helped build the region’s Renal Transplant Program. This work created the first full-spectrum tertiary renal care system in Northwest Ohio.

Ron practiced nephrology alongside his longtime colleague and friend, Dr. Herb Stockard, and held staff privileges at every Toledo-area hospital. He served as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, Director of Continuing Medical Education at St. Anne Mercy Hospital, and Director of the St. Anne Interval Pain Service. He authored or co-authored more than 70 publications and was a respected speaker locally, nationally, and internationally.

His relentless drive to relieve suffering led him to explore new approaches to pain control when traditional medicine fell short. Ron earned a Ph.D. in acupuncture after studying in Canada, Europe, and the United States. He later developed innovative techniques and therapeutic devices that provided safe, effective pain relief for countless patients. His integrative approach to medicine reflected both his scientific rigor and his deep empathy.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ron was defined by his love for his family and his passions outside of medicine. He cherished time spent with his family and friends, found joy in riding horses, and was never happier than when playing his five‑string banjos—hosting jam sessions filled with music, laughter, and friendship. His greatest joy in life was helping people, and he carried that purpose into every relationship, every patient interaction, and every moment of connection.

Ron was preceded in death by his father Harold Shapiro; mother Zelma (Nathanson) Shapiro; stepmother Irene (Bayliss) Shapiro; and uncle Marvin Shapiro. He is survived by his sister Susan (Morty) Shapiro Tuvell; daughters Nikki (Dave) Shapiro Potz, Jami (Ric) Shapiro Martin, Kerri (Bobby) Shapiro Johnson, and Toni Shapiro Snapp; grandchildren Dayne (Kylie), Trent, and Drake Snapp; Evyn Johnson; Cole and Piper Potz; great grandchild Georgia Snapp; and his beloved companion, Donna Owens.

Ron’s legacy lives on in the thousands of lives he touched—through healing, teaching, innovation, and love. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life for Ronald (Ron) Samuel Shapiro, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.P. will be held Friday, October 16, 2026, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Brookwood Metropark, 5604 Swan Creek Drive, Toledo, Ohio 43614.

Friends and family are invited to gather in Ron’s honor. In tribute to his lifelong love of music and the many jam sessions he hosted, guests who play instruments are warmly welcome to bring them and join in a final send‑off of shared music and celebration.

Those who wish may also bring a potluck dish or snack to share, though there is no expectation to do so. Ron loved cooking for others and providing food at his gatherings, and the family welcomes anyone who would like to honor that tradition in his memory.
