Mr. Richard Bruce Starn, of Toledo Ohio, passed away, surrounded by loved ones, on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on April 27, 1954 to Patricia Manton and Harold “Hal” Starn. Richard had a kind and compassionate heart. He was a volunteer for several years at David’s House Compassion, a nonprofit organization providing support for individuals and families whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS. He was a member of the Client Service Team, a team of elite volunteers who have the skills to provide intensive, specialized support, and sometimes, in the most unusual, unique, and heartbreaking circumstances. Independently, Richard offered his help and time to friends and strangers alike. He provided transportation and sought out resources of food, furniture, and other household items for those in need. Richard had a passion for gardening and yard work, and would spend countless hours landscaping his own yard, as well as many others. As a devoted son, he was always there to assist his mother with everything from household tasks, taking her to run errands and, especially, decorating her home for Christmas. Richard was lighthearted and humorous, outgoing and friendly. He was inclusive of all, and never met a stranger. It’s no wonder that he has left behind a myriad of friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Jill (Starn) Johnson; step-father, Samuel Manton; and father, Hal. He is survived by his partner of 34 years, Ron Bell; mother, Patricia; siblings, Susan (Bill) Snead, Harold “Mickey” (Nancy) Starn, Jeffery (Jeffery Khan) Manton, and many close nieces, nephews, great nieces nephews, in-laws, and chosen family. A memorial service will be held at the Heritage Church of God, 3520 Strayer Rd, Maumee, Ohio, on Saturday, December 15, 2018. Doors will be open at 10:00 am, and the service will begin at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a charitable donation, in Richards name, to one of the following: The Ann Wayson Locher Memorial Fund for HIV Care, The American Cancer Society, or The Heritage Church of God.
