Richard S. Bachar, of Sylvania, Ohio and formerly of Bay City, Michigan, beloved father and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly in his home on December 24th, 2021, at the age of 74. Richard was born August 30, 1947, the son of Richard and Helen (Horvath) Bachar. Richard attended St. Stanislaus High School in Bay City and (then) Penta County Vocational School in Perrysburg, Ohio. He worked as an electrician and electrical estimator for contractors in the Toledo, Ohio area and was a long-time member of the IBEW Local 8 Union. During his career, he designed lighting for the Valentine Theater, Costco and many Toledo Public Schools. In 1970, he was one of fifty electricians working at Gross Electric. He retired from Transtar after working at Brint Electric. Richard also served as a volunteer at the Sylvania Senior Center and the Cherry Street Mission. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Theresa Quniones. Richard is survived by his siblings, Elizabeth MacDonald and Steven Bachar; his significant other, Jane Sullivan and her children, William (Elizabeth) and John; his four children, Kevin (Joy), Jason (Cindy), Brenda (James) Bal, Eric (Michelle) and their mother, Barbara; and eight grandchildren. Richard was very active up to the day of his passing. As a member of both the Holland and Sylvania pickleball Clubs, he had anticipated resuming play in January. Richard could often be found at the Merickel-Farley Trout Club enjoying coffee and a donut on Saturday mornings. Wednesdays allowed time for ballroom dancing at the American Legion. Occasionally he could be found line dancing – a skill that he had honed over the past 40 years. Additionally, Richard was an active member of the Maumee Elks, the Sylvania Moose and formerly the Maumee Eagles. He kept his boat docked at East Magee Marina this past summer to give him access to Lake Erie where he fished for walleye and perch. Not only would he be on the lake at 7am but would return to the tranquil location after a day of pickleball. The reason he enjoyed being with Jane was because she could catch 97 fish in an hour. Of course Jane never put a worm on a hook or took a fish off so Richard spent all his time baiting hooks and throwing fish back. His nephews in Michigan were also special fishing companions. Richard was known for the vegetables and fruit that he grew. He was a prolific gardener who would talk for hours about NPK fertilizer. As soon as the sun was up, he was off to the backyard, caring for his plants. He enjoyed cooking and canning too. Making soups with fresh herbs was his specialty. The best part about gardening for Richard was sharing the harvest with family and friends. Richard’s cremated remains will be scattered at various areas in nature at which he loved to spend time. Donations in Richard’s memory can be made to the Lake Improvement Fund.
