Regula M. Kummer

Beloved mother, grandmother, and friend Regula M. Kummer-Josi, aged 79, of Toledo, Ohio died peacefully Friday, September 16th at The Toledo Hospital. She is remembered and missed by her son Lukas, daughter-in-law Michelle, two wonderful grandchildren, two nieces, and two grand nieces, extended family, and many, many friends.

Regula was born in 1943 in Switzerland and emigrated to the United States where she met her husband and love of her life Martin P Kummer, a Mathematical Physicist. They were married in 1967 and remained so until his untimely death in 1997. She was a member of the Broadmead Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and held service to her community and all people in highest regard. She volunteered and worked tirelessly as a CASA/GAL for abused and neglected children in Toledo for many years, receiving the first G.F. Bettineski National CASA Volunteer of the Year Award, The Junior League of Toledo Community Service Award, the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award, the St. Charles and Mercy Hospital’s “Woman of Mercy” Award, the inaugural Regula Josi power-of-one award, and was recognized as President George H. W. Bush’s 550th “Point of Light.” Later, she volunteered at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, as well as traveling and working in Nicaragua undertaking many clean water projects with the El Porvenir organization. Indeed, she had a love for family, humanity, travel, nature, music, and charity.

She will always be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, focused, quick with a kind word or thankful thought, and always willing to lend a hand. The piece of this world that her passing leaves empty is one that all who knew and loved her will aspire to fill.

The family requests donations be made in her honor to one of several charitable organizations: The Lucas County CASA Program, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, El Porvenir, Doctors without Borders, or The Nature Conservancy.
