Phyllis J Van Tassel

Phyllis Jean VanTassel (Perry) of Maumee, Ohio passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, June 5, 2017 at St. Lukes Hospital. She was born on November 18, 1935 in Montcoal, West Virginia to Agnes (Green) and Albert Perry. Phyllis loved growing up in Dorothy, West Virginia, climbing mountains and playing in the creek. While being a tomboy, she also blossomed into a beautiful young woman who was a high school majorette and prom queen. Phyllis had fond memories of life on Oakridge Drive and over 30 years of teaching at McGregor Elementary School. She was loved by her students, parents, and peers garnering awards for her service like Teacher of the Year. She enjoyed spending time with friends and neighbors, traveling, riding her bike and gardening. She had a special love and appreciation for nature. After retiring from education, Phyllis volunteered her time at Christ Presbyterian Church, St. Annes Hospital and St. Lukes Hospital, as well as teaching English as a Second Language. She generously gave much of her time to helping others. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Delano Perry; and ex-husband, Hal VanTassel. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Carol Ulrich and family, Kirk, Neil, and Brian (Bailey); daughter, Jill Reiter and family, Tom, Josh, Mason, Mathew, and Ellie; sister, Delisle Mancari; sisters-in-law, Arita Perry and Rozella (Dick) Runnells; 2 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life has been planned at Christ Presbyterian Church, 4225 W. Sylvania Ave, Toledo, Ohio 43623 on June 24, 2017 at 2pm.
