The Reverend Myrl Elden Smith (known and Elden) died April 30, 2022 in Toledo, Ohio. Born October 21, 1938, in Circleville, Ohio, he graduated from New Bremen High School in 1956, Wittenberg University in 1960, and the Episcopal Divinity School and Harvard University in 1964. In 1964, he was ordained a Priest of the Episcopal Church. Father Smith served Ohio parishes in Columbus, Ashland, Norwalk, and Findlay. A Priest of the Ohio Episcopal Diocese, Elden served on numerous elected and appointed diocesan and national Church bodies. For many years, Father Smith was Dean of the Diocese of Ohio West Deanery. Smith married Patricia McBride in 1962. They had four children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith died in 2000. In 2003, Elden met and married John Nagel. They have lived in Toledo and Sylvania Township since 2004. Both Elden and John were past regular participants in euchre tournaments. Collector cars also occupied their attention. An AMC Gremlin and a Pacer, as well as a Cadillac Seville, an Eldorado, and an Allante have drawn attention at shows and cruises. The Cremation Society of Toledo handled the arrangements. A memorial service at Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, followed by committal of ashes in the Cathedral columbarium will follow at a later date. Please send memorial contributions to the Toledo/Lucas County Food Bank, Cherry Street Mission Ministries, or the Toledo/Lucas County Humane Society.
