Melanie Susan (Hyland) Mathewson, 68, passed peacefully January 21, 2021 at University of Toledo Medical Center after battling health issues. She was born November 28, 1952 to George Ambrose Hyland and Ethelyn Jean Hyland (Hackney) in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sherry Hyland and brothers, Michael Hyland and Kevin Hyland. She is survived by sisters, Julie Hatton, Maryrose (Harold) Bigelow, and Tricia Hyland; and brothers, Timothy Hyland and Brian (Sharon) Hyland, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will forever be remembered for her extensive knowledge of history, logic-problems, wildlife, dog-loving, “comfy” clothing, luxurious down-bedding, thoughtful gifting, and perennial gardening. She was passionately committed to being a caring mother and grandmother all while being fiercely independent, strong, quick-witted and never without humor. She had a sensational love for reading, books of all kinds and watching movies from period pieces to Disney Classics with the children that were so special to her. Over the years, Melanie was a great shoulder-to-lean-on and a sounding-board for many generations. She was a source of non-judgmental advice and direction. Many friends knew that her home was a safe-place when they needed to talk or clear their minds. She entertained little ones with her love for camping in her earlier years and later with reading and story-telling. She leaves behind her husband, Judson Mathewson (married April 5, 1980) of Waterville, Ohio; children, Jarod Mathewson and Emily (Jeff) Mason; grandchildren, Maya, Layne and Nora. Her memory, love and strength will carry on in their hearts for generations. A private memorial service will be held for family later this year when we can all safely convene to celebrate her life together. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Melanie’s spirit with a gift to the World Literacy Foundation or Natures-Nursery.org
