Kirksey-White, Mrs.Mattie Laverne October 26,1952- April 25, 2017 Mattie Laverne Kirksey-White age 64, affectionately known as Cookie, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Mattie was born October 26, 1952 in Muskegon, Michigan. She attended Muskegon Public Schools in Muskegon, Michigan. Cookie previously was employed as a sales clerk in retail and cook for Red Lobster restaurant. At an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, she was a member of Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church under the Ministry of her Grandfather Rev. Isaiah Kirksey. Many Gospel legends appeared at Spring Street Baptist and this left a passion in her heart to lift up her voice in praise. Cookie loved to sing and was a member of the youth and junior choir. In her teen years she joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Pastored by Rev. Van Hannett, she continued her songs of praise as a member of the church choir. Cookie moved to Toledo in the early 1980s where she spent most of her adult life caring for family and friends. Cookie loved to read, be it novels, short stories and her Bible. Cookie was a member of the Northwestern Missionary Baptist Church of Toledo, OH, and served as a member of the Choir. Survivors include, son Lontrice Kirksey of Toledo, OH. grandson Darnell Kirksey of Muskegon,MI. Keith White of Muskegon, MI. 4 brothers Nathaniel(Violet) Johnson of Muskegon Hgts. MI. Jarvis (Barbara) Robinson of Belleville,IL, Lowell Kirksey Jr. and Isaiah (Vivian) Kirksey of Muskegon,MI. 3 sisters Gloria Morgan and Maybell Milligan of Memphis, TN. Yulonda Townsel of Belleville, IL.14 nieces & nephews, 24 great nieces & nephews, 4 great-great nieces & nephews and a host of loving cousins and friends. Mattie was preceded in death by her daughter Tanya Kirksey, parents Lowell Kirksey Sr. and Lucy Ann Brown, brothers Robert W. James, Lowell Kirksey (1950), sisters Lois Stephens, CasSandra Parker, great-great niece Serenity Menders. Memorial service will be held Saturday June 24,2017 at 3:00p.m. at Northwestern Missionary Baptist Church, 4408 Lewis Ave. Toledo,OH.43612 “Rev. Willie L. Knighten officiating.
