Mary Ellis Szuch, age 89, of South Rockwood, MI, passed away Wednesday, September 21st, at the home of her daughter.The daughter of Mary (Sohajda) and James Ellis, Hungarian immigrants, Mary was born January 17, 1922, in Haviland, OH. She was a 1941 graduate of Pemberville High School, where she played on the girls basketball team. She attended Bowling Green State University in 1941, but was unable to continue her education due to World War II. Mary worked throughout the war as a “Rosie the Riveter” in various factories assembling tanks, aircraft and automobiles.She was married to Sigmond “Dutch” Szuch on June 29, 1946, in Bryan, OH. Mary worked side by side with Dutch, at their commercial fishing business, The Clearwater Fish Company, for over two decades. In 1965, they relocated from Toledo to South Rockwood, MI. She was also a 35-year employee of the Champion Spark Plug Company in Toledo. Following her 1987 retirement, Mary returned to her family farm in Pemberville, OH, where she enjoyed tending her garden.Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dutch and her brother, James Ellis II. Mary is survived by two sisters, Margaret Kerr, of Bowling Green, OH and Jenny Szuch, of Curtice, OH; three daughters, Mary Kukwa, of Pemberville, OH, Janet Murray, of Baltimore, MD and Barbara Szuch Ellis, of South Rockwood, MI and two grandchildren.
