Mary Ellen Shugg, age 64, of Brooklyn, MI passed away on August 31, 2013 at home while surrounded by loving family. She was born on April 17, 1949 in Southington, CT to Charles and Helen Uznanski. She graduated in 1967 from Southington High School and then attended Wilcox Tech where she became a LPN. Mary Ellen married Russell Shugg on February 1, 1969 and lived in New London, Connecticut where he was in the U.S. Navy. They moved to Ypsilanti, MI upon his discharge from the Navy in 1970, and then to Brooklyn, MI in 1988.Mary Ellen is survived by her husband, Russell Shugg; mother, Helen (Leitz) Uznanski; daughter Kathleen Shugg-Hileman, Sons Christopher (Julie) Shugg and Bradley (Melissa) Shugg; grandchildren Zoey, Alexis, Mark & Katie, Christopher, Ashley & Joshua, Gabe, Emily, Ethan, Derek, Logan, Jacob, and Caleb; great-grandchildren Spencer and Sydney; brothers Richard (Suzanne) Uznanski, Thomas (Shirley) Uznanski; and sisters Susan (David) Zoni, and Barbara (Frank) Bennett. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Uznanski. Mary Ellens twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren were the loves of her life. She was an avid gardener surrounding herself with many plants and blooms. She also enjoyed birds, tracking the many varieties of birds and waterfowl near her lake home. Mary spent much of her free time playing Backgammon on the computer with opponents all around the world. The family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 29th at Gene Davis Banquet Hall in Vandercook Lake, MI. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow. Considerations for memorial contributions are: Wallingford Land Trust in Wallingford, CT; The CJD Foundation, Inc; or the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center.
