Mary Ann Schiel

August 8, 1927 — November 19, 2024

Maryann Moesh Schiel, aged 97, passed away on November 19, 2024, in Sylvania, Ohio. Born on August 8, 1927, to Loretta and John Moesh, Maryann was the second of three children. She lived a full and vibrant life characterized by her devotion to her community, her faith, and her love for her family and friends. Maryann was a proud graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, Ohio, class of 1945, and continued her education at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, before graduating from St. Vincent School of Nursing in Toledo. Her educational background paved the way for a life dedicated to caring for others, a trait she carried into all aspects of her life from her career as a nurse to being a wife, a loving mother of five children, and a dedicated friend.

She was deeply involved in her church, Gesu Parish in Toledo, Ohio, and cherished her social life, finding joy in playing bridge, reading, baking, and decorating birthday cakes for those she loved. She was an avid baseball fan, especially of the Detroit Tigers, and enjoyed listening to their games on the radio throughout the season. Maryann's warmth and generosity touched many lives, and her home was often filled with the laughter and happiness of her family and friends, especially around the holidays. She was a gracious host every Thanksgiving and Christmas turning her home into a comforting, cozy, and welcoming space for her large immediate family, extended relatives, and friends.

Maryann was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Francis, and sister, Eleanor, her beloved husband, Wayne Schiel, to whom she was married for 59 years, and her sons, Thomas W. Schiel and Richard J. Schiel. She is survived by her children, Joan E. England, Mary “Kitty” Calvert, and Scott (Michelle) Schiel; her grandchildren, Kristen (Jennifer) Griffin, Erica (Matt) DeShano, Angela (Dustin) Schiel Ferguson, Emily (Zachary) Calvert, Kelsey Schiel, and Kyle Schiel; and great-grandchildren, Bailey Griffin and Dustin Ferguson.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Kingston of Sylvania and Northwest Ohio Hospice for their care. Maryann's life was a testament to her kind and gentle nature, her resilience, endurance, and unwavering faith. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A mass to honor Maryann's life will be held at Gesu Catholic Church on November 30, 2024, at 11:00 AM. The family will hold a private burial at a later date.
