Lloyd A. Jones

Nov 27, 1942 — Jul 15, 2026

Lloyd A. Jones of Weston, Ohio passed away on July 15, 2026 at The University of Toledo Medical Center.

He was the son of Clyde R. Jones and Laura (Whetstone) Jones. Lloyd grew up as a rural farm boy wandering the fields, woods and streams surrounding Weston, Ohio. There was never any choice as to whether or where he would attend college. His grandparents met at Otterbein in the 1890's, and his mother graduated in 1927. Lloyd transferred from Otterbein to Ohio State in 1962 and into agriculture where he completed a B.S. and an M.S. in agronomy - weed science and botany. In 1966, an NDEA fellowship provided support to attend Purdue for his Ph.D. Upon finishing at Purdue in late 1970, he and his wife, Carol A. Humphrey, returned back to his folks' small farm. Lloyd tried agricultural consulting and farming with his father. It didn't take long for him to realize that consulting would not be his career, so he began to search for a university position. By sheer good fortune, The University of Toledo had a position open for a biology instructor, and he was hired. As the years passed, his work varied, but it was primarily undergraduate teaching. His agricultural and botanical background filled some voids in the department. His work included some research and several graduate courses and committees. After 27 years, he retired in 1999 to increase farming. He retired from active farming in 2010.

Lloyd's many special interests afforded him a wide variety of friends. He collected antique farm machinery and artist signed pottery. Lloyd was often called by other collectors requesting information as he was considered the expert. He would laugh at his two nicknames, "Tractor Lloyd" or "Professor Jones." Lloyd was a member of the Maumee Valley Gun Collectors, Ohio Gun Collectors, the Marlin Fire Arms Association, and the Black Swamp Conservancy.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Jennifer Rogers; brother, C. Lewis Jones of Eureka Springs, AR; his niece, Katlin E. Ward (Jeffrey); nephews, Abel (Monica) of Bishop, CA and Colin (John) of Indian Hills, CO; grand nephew and grand nieces, Whitaker, Marion and Winslow Ward of Fayetteville, AR. Jennifer would like to extend a special thanks to Dr Susan Haley for her visits.

Donations may be made to the Black Swamp Conservancy, https://blackswamp.org/invest/donate/.

In accordance with the family's wishes following cremation, burial will be private.
