John “Jack” McDonnell Rockwell departed this life to go home to be with the Lord on September 24, 2026, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, in Toledo, Ohio, from complications following the amputation of his leg. John was born November 5, 1959, in Toledo, Ohio, and adopted by Grant B. and Louise M. Rockwell (Sexton). He attended St. Francis de Sales High School and graduated in 1977. John married the love of his life, Sharon Girts, on October 3, 1981. They were looking forward to celebrating their 45th anniversary this October.

Originally, he wanted to become a doctor, but life and health issues prevented this from happening. He became a “Jack of all trades” instead. Some of his jobs included: election official, construction worker, physical therapy assistant, and a salesperson for Hickory Farms and a respiratory supply company. He could sell water to a turnip! His favorite job was working for a lady that ran karaoke. He would set up and tear down the equipment for the show and sing a few songs himself. He loved it. It gave him an opportunity to sing his favorite songs, of which he had many, but his particular favorite was Neil Diamond’s “Holly Holy.” He could sometimes sing it better than Niel Diamond himself! He also loved all sports, especially basketball, since he played varsity for St. Francis. Even though John lost a leg, he fondly remembered running with his dad as a kid. Picture him running in heaven now with two legs.

John is survived by his wife, Sharon Rockwell; daughter, Sarah (Mark) Sheets; son, Grant (Renae) Rockwell; grandchildren, Grant Rockwell, Harper Sheets, Gideon Rockwell, and Lily Rockwell. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Varwig; niece, Adrianne Varwig; and brothers-in-law, John Girts and Roger Girts. John was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, John Girts, Jr.

Connecting with his birth family these last few years was something that brought him much joy.

A Celebration of Life will be held at his long-time church, Grace Church (3700 Dorr St, Toledo, OH) on October 3, 2026, with visitation from 10:00am-11:00am and service immediately following. In lieu of flowers family would like donations sent to Grace Church.
