John A. Pero passed away on May 20, 2025 at the age of 77. He was born May 9, 1948 in Toledo, Ohio to Orrin and Lavern (Anderson) Pero. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Joanne Pero. He had three sons, Don (Donna) Christian, Brian (Andrea) Pero, and Matthew (Holly) Pero. His grandchildren were Erin Cheesbro, Morgen (Jeff) Crawford, Megan Ottney, Brenden Ottney, Grace Pero, Joshua Pero, Mason Pero, Noah Pero, and Claire Pero. He also had 6 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his siblings, Tom Pero and Patricia Gedert.
John worked at First Federal as the Vice President of Data Processing. When he retired he found two jobs that he absolutely loved: Bus driving for Evergreen School and mowing grass for Heatherdowns Golf Course. He also enjoyed providing security for the Oakshade race track. He enjoyed keeping busy and being with people.
John had many hobbies. He and his son, Don, have been making wine for over 20 years. Their recipes have won Best in Show 3 out of the last 4 years at the Fulton County Fair. He enjoyed woodworking and made beautiful kitchen cabinets and Flag Boxes for veterans. He also enjoyed playing golf with his sons, Brian and Matt. He enjoyed new and unique experiences including bee keeping and dog sled racing.
John enjoyed his family and hosted an apple butter festival for his family for over 30 years. The apple butter fest grew into a huge event over the years and was enjoyed by all. He was a proud member of the Catholic War Veterans and enjoyed their fellowship and assisting with their events.
John was a very kind man who thought of others before himself. He was a man of few words, but he was always there to listen. When he did speak, the words he did say were thought out and meaningful. John touched many lives and will be missed by all. Those who knew him, know that he made the world a better place.
John’s family would like to invite you to his Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at the Catholic War Veteran Hallin Assumption, Ohio. The address is 14124 State Route 64, Metamora, OH 43540. Doors open at noon, service at 12:30 and a potluck to follow until 6:00. Guests are encouraged to bring a dish to share.
