On January 17, 2024, John Michael Pernia passed away at the age of 74. By his side were his children and his faithful dog, Grace. John was born on May 4, 1949, and he did not come into this world alone, as he was a triplet. Also born on that day were his sisters, Jean (Pernia) McDole and Jane Pernia. Jane passed away in 2004. Also preceding John in death are his parents, Arthur and Rose (Lufts) Pernia; twin brothers, Albert and Adelbert Pernia; and sister, Sandra (Pernia) Moore.
John spent his childhood in West Toledo and in 1969, he joined the United States Army. Prior to shipping off to Vietnam, he married Roxanna (Brown) Pernia. Upon returning from Vietnam, John and Rox purchased a home in Toledo and spent 20 years raising 3 children: Tracie (Tony) Fountain, John A. Pernia, and Kristie Mundt.
John spent 30 years working at the original Toledo Jeep Assembly plant. He was able to take early retirement at age 50. John spent his retirement years living in Holland, Ohio, where he enjoyed maintaining two acres of property. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, driving muscle cars, and spending time in the parks with his beloved dogs. John loved animals and if you were an animal lucky enough to be adopted by him, then you had an exceptional life.
Besides his children and his sister, Jean, John leaves behind 8 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John’s wishes were to be cremated. A celebration of life will be held in his home on Sunday, February 4, 2024, as an Open House, beginning at 1:00 pm.
John would have liked that any memorial contributions be made to an animal rescue organization of your choice.
The family would like to thank the Veterans Administration and Heartland Hospice for the help they provided in the care of their father.
