John S. Mowat Jr., 95, passed away at 7:59 P.M. on Monday, February 14, 2022, at Kingston Residence in Sylvania, Ohio. John (Jack) was born in Chicago, IL on January 12, 1927 to John Sr. and Maurine (Banker) Mowat. He married Jean Hazelrig on December 30, 1954, and she preceded him in death on January 6, 2006. On April 4, 2007 He married Jacquelyn Rosselot on April 4, 2007, and she preceded him in death on November 28, 2020. After graduating from Adrian High School in Adrian, Michigan in 1944 he served in the Army Air Force during World War II from July 1944 to June 1946. Jack was a 1950 graduate of Michigan State College (now known as Michigan State University) with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. He was an avid “Spartan” until his passing. Jack owned and managed Mowat and Son Orchards in Adrian, MI until 1988. In 1969 Jack was selected by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation as one of the top farmers in Michigan, where he toured and studied agricultural practices in the US and around the world. In 1970 Jack was elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives where he served for 8 years. In 1978 he was elected to Michigan State Senate until he stepped down in 1982. From 1984 until his retirement in 1993 Jack served as Executive Director for the Republican Party in the Michigan House of Representatives. In retirement Jack dabbled in home building and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in Lake Lure, North Carolina. In addition to being a gifted photographer he continued his avocation for building electronic and hydraulic devices. Survivors include three sons, Rick Mowat (Paula) of Windsor, New York, Dr. Rex Mowat (Linda) of Sylvania, Ohio, and Ron Mowat (Carolyn) of Jasper, Indiana; and seven grandchildren, Zander, Tyler, Dylan, Cameron, Lina, Nellie, and William. He is also survived by nieces and nephews including Bruce Neal of Adrian, Michigan. Jack was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Vivian Sheehan and Marjory Neal. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held Saturday, March 5 in Adrian, Michigan at Chaloner & Co., 108 W Maumee St, Adrian, MI 49221 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
