Jay G. Charles, 86, of Perrysburg, Ohio passed away at home early on October 8, 2012 after battling the ill effects of old age and related illness. He was attended by his loving wife Sally and all his children, Melinda, Michael, and Jeff. Jay will always be remembered for his love of life and genuine love of all persons of all ages. Whether it be inviting friends in off the street for dinner or helping out with a broken water heater, Jay was always willing to offer whatever he could to assist those in need. A master of “small talk” and showing small appreciations to all he encountered, Jay made sure those around him knew he never took them for granted. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to be with them. In years past Jay was very active with both the Perrysburg Little League and the Church Basketball league coaching for the Methodist church. He was an avid golfer, a lover of poetry, dogs of all shapes and sizes, and a large cat too. Jay would have graduated from Perrysburg HS in 1945 save for the fact he joined the Army instead his diploma came later, courtesy of the U.S. Army. Returning from the Occupation of Germany in 1947 Jay became employed by the Columbia Gas Company for over 30 years. He made a successful life for himself in Perrysburg and with the help of family and friends, survived, in good humor, the tragedies and triumphs that came his way. Jay was always proud of the fact his family line extended back to some of the first settlers in Perrysburg and his respect for this lineage will not be forgotten. He is also immediately survived by his loving grandchildren Matt Heffernan, Austen and Kyler Charles, and niece Sue Gastesi. Jays first wife Barbara (Sarver) predeceased him in 1962 when she died of cancer. Jay is the last surviving family member of the children born and raised in Perrysburg by his parents Leslie and Cora (Corbin) Charles. Jack, Florene, Vonnie, and Floyd, have all gone now and at last, the “baby” of the family, too. It is then with great sadness, fond memories, and deep respect, we say goodbye to our loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Special thanks to Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care and services. A memorial service will be announced shortly. “I dont like to commit myself about heaven or hell, you see, I have friends in both places.” Mark Twain
