Jan Van Buren Myers (81) passed away peacefully, with her three loving children by her side. She was born in Adrian, MI, grew up in Riga, MI and later attended Blissfield High School. She also graduated from X-ray training at Maumee Valley hospital in the early 60’s. Nicknamed “Nutsy” by her cousin George “Sonny” Smith, she lived up to that name with a smile that could light up a room, an eager laugh and her zany zest for life. Over the course of Jan’s lifetime, she worked as an X-Ray & CT Technologist at Medical College of Ohio and later Flower hospital. Following her medical career, she went on to fulfill a lifelong dream and began Jan Van Buren Designs, a custom clothing design business, in West Toledo in the 80’s. Her many talents in pattern making, tailoring, sewing and fabric selections were put on display at various fashion shows, held at charity events and numerous local restaurants, in the Toledo area. Shortly thereafter, she met & married James E. Myers and moved to California. Later returning to live in Ohio again, Jim and Jan purchased Al Smiths restaurant on Secor Rd., Toledo, OH and owned and operated it for a number of years. They eventually retired and thoroughly enjoyed their lives in Bradenton, FL. Jan was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be forever be remembered in our hearts and minds.
Jan was proceeded in death by her husband, James Myers, former husband, Garry Stoffel, beloved parents, Ardis & Lloyd Van Buren, brothers, Thomas & Philip Van Buren and is survived by her brother Jerry Van Buren (Janet), sister-in-law, Joanne Van Buren, sister-in-law’s Carol & Sharon (Ralph Kelley) Stoffel, daughter Tracey Stoffel, son Steven Stoffel (Kim) and son Brian Stoffel, granddaughter’s, Katie and Abby, grandsons, Drew (Mary) and Ben and great grandson, Carter Joseph and many nieces and nephews. Mema, watch over us until we meet again.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Genesis Village, Oakleaf Village and Elara Hospice for the kindness and care they gave to Jan in her final years. In leu of flowers, please consider donations, on her behalf, to Elara Hospice, 3425 Executive Parkway Unit 206, Toledo, OH 43606.
