Jane Elizabeth Devine, 85, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2026, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. She was born on July 29, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, to George and Jane (Jacob) Ellis.
Jane grew up in Toledo and graduated from Thomas A. DeVilbiss High School, Class of 1959. She later attended Michael's Beauty College in Toledo, Ohio, and went on to work as a hairstylist at Kimmey Kay Beauty Salon in Perrysburg, Ohio, as well as at various other salons throughout a career that spanned more than 30 years.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, George and Jane (Jacob) Ellis, and by her husband, Charles Devine, who passed away on October 8, 1996. She is survived by her children, Leigh Devine, Doug Devine, and Quinn Devine; her beloved dog, Mitzie; her siblings, Sue Corey, Georgann Hollister, George (Linda) Ellis, and Bill (Shirley) Ellis; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Jane will be remembered for her genuine kindness, thoughtfulness, and deep concern for others. She was fiercely devoted to her family and cared for them with unwavering love. Her children were always at the center of her heart, and that love guided many of her choices, including her decision to seek treatment during her illness.
Jane had a wonderful sense of style and design, with a natural flair for making things beautiful. Her creativity lives on through her artwork and through the many pieces of furniture she refinished, repurposed, and shared with family. She enjoyed searching for treasures at garage sales and antique malls. She had an eye for possibility, seeing what something could become with care, patience, and imagination.
She loved reading, particularly mysteries and biographies. She enjoyed watching Masterpiece on PBS, mystery shows, and comedy shows. During the pandemic, she embraced technology, learning to use her iPhone and iPad to stay connected and entertained.
Jane carried with her fond memories of St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, where she especially loved the Divine Liturgy. Her faith remained a quiet and enduring source of comfort throughout her life.
As her health declined, her family was grateful to spend meaningful time with her. Though they were concerned about her, those days brought closeness and many treasured conversations. Jane also reconnected with her good friend Ginny Francis, another bright spot in her final months.
Jane said she had no bucket list, feeling her life had been full and deeply loved. She met what was ahead with curiosity and peace, saying, "It's really interesting what's going to happen next. It's fun and peaceful." Even then, she comforted those she loved, reassuring them that happiness would one day return.
In keeping with Jane's wishes, no service will be held. Her family will celebrate her life privately and will forever carry her in their hearts. They are deeply grateful to The University of Toledo Medical Center's Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center and to the caregivers at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the kindness, compassion, and care they provided.
