Jack Mcgill

Jack McGill, age 87, of North Toledo, finished his final round and signed his score card on June 4, 2015. He was born in San Diego, California to George and Mary Alice McGill. A graduate of Woodward High School, he served as a radio operator in the US Army Air Corps during World War II stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. He attended the University of Toledo for one year before commencing his work career. Jack worked at Pure Oil Refinery for 11 years, Inmont Corp for 20 years, and ODOT for 11 years. Jack married the former Arlene Kries and together they raised five children in their beloved North Toledo. Proud owners of their historic, Victorian home, they resided on the same block for 60 years until illness brought them to assisted living at Oakleaf Village of Toledo. Jack played football for Woodward and the University of Toledo, pitched and played in fast-pitch games, was a handball champion and was known for playing “physical” basketball games well into his later years. He had a lifelong passion for golf, was the winner of many golf tournaments and achieved two holes-in-one. At age 80, with his youngest son as his partner, he won a tournament at Treetops golf course in Gaylord, Michigan. Jack was also a lifelong University of Michigan fan and was a season-ticket holder for many years. GO BLUE! He played and coached all his sons in Federation basketball and coached the Andres Lounge basketball team to multiple championships. Jack was also an avid fan of womens softball, and he and his wife traveled the state following his older daughters softball teams. Jack served as a father figure, confidante, and role model in community service and was a mentor at the Friendly Center and on the front porch of his home. He served on the Historical Society, was active in the local Democratic party and was a union president. His hobbies included fishing, cooking, reading, gardening, listening to rock-and-roll, blues, and music of every genre. And he never met a stray he could turn away. As his children grew, there were yearly vacations to Alpena; in later years, trips to Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, Tennessee, Hawaii, and Jamaica that included his cherished grandchildren, and to New Orleans first with just his youngest daughter, followed by many trips there with his wife. He and Arlenes favorite spot was Hawaii, and he even sported Maui Jack on his license plates. Blessed with a heavy dose of Irish blarney, there are stories of him to last generations. The foundation in Jacks life always was Arlene, his wife of over 66 years. Her devotion as his health declined was a powerful testament to true love. A grateful thank you to her from her loving husband and children. Special thanks to Oakleaf Village for providing dignity and compassion in their care. Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Robert and sister-in-law, Anne McGill; brother-in-law, Norbert Kries; and his nephew and special godson, Matthew McGill. Jack is survived by his wife, Arlene; sons, Michael (Patricia Stephens)of Naples, Florida; James (Lori Baker)of Millbury, Ohio, and David of Toledo; daughters, Patricia of Elyria, Ohio, and Janet (Dennis) Terry of Toledo; grandchildren, Sean, Brian, Kelly, and Nicholas (Stephanie); great-granddaughter, Quinn McGill; great-grandsons, Jackson and Kason McGill. He is also survived by his niece, Lisa McGill; great-nephews, Zachary and Justin; great-niece, Megan; sister-in-law, Marlene Kries; nephew, Darryl (Jill) Kries, and great-nieces, Hannah and Julia. A celebration of Jacks life will be held July 18, 2015, 1-3 p.m., at The Lobby of the Oliver House, 27 Broadway Street, Toledo. Jack was large in stature and presence and lived his life like the title of one of his favorite songs: “Aint no Brakeman on this Train.” Those wishing to make memorial tributes may direct them to the family.
