Ila Mae (Householder) Banbury passed away April 15, 2017. Ila Mae (Householder)Banbury was born in 1927 in Walbridge, Ohio to Lawrence and Verna Householder. As the eighth child of eleven children, she had a very active and loving childhood. During WWII she studied at Bloomdale High School and graduated from there in 1945. In fall of that same year, she began her study of nursing in the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps at Fostoria Hospital and Registered Nursing in Toledo, Ohio and completed it in 1950 by graduating from Maumee Valley Hospital Nurses Training School.After nursing in Toledo Area Hospitals; Lucas County Home/VA, Toledo, Riverside, St. Lukes, the State Hospital in Toledo, and as a private duty nurse. Ila Banbury became certified as a Nursing Instructor in Clinical Psychology. She began teaching at Ypsilanti State Hospital in 1964. In 1967, after the birth of her third son, she made a career shift by beginning her elementary teaching career. For the next two years she taught multiple grades at Longbridge Elementary in Exeter Twp. Carleton, Michigan, (one of the few remaining one-room school houses in the state), and then focusing on first grade exclusively at the Airport School System. Ila Banbury received her Masters in Education degree in 1973. For the next 17 years, first grade students were sent on their scholastic journey with memories of field trips, classroom guests, a Halloween visit from “The Witch” or the “Winnie the Pooh Day” celebration. Ila Banbury retired from elementary education in 1986 but continued to teach adult education classes until 1991. She is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and has been recognized for her teaching excellence. Throughout her career, her aphorism was (and still is) “If I have not taught love, I have taught nothing.”. Ila Banbury has authored several poems based on her life and career experiences. In 1950 she married Laurence Banbury (deceased) who she met earlier at Maumee Valley Hospital. They raised three sons, Jeffrey (born 1951), Terrence (born 1954), and Gordon (born 1966). Ila Banbury has two grandsons (Tyson Banbury, Zane Banbury) and two granddaughters (Amanda Curry, Miranda Banbury) and several great-grandchildren (Nicholas and Brianna Rector, Logan and Alaina Curry, and Olivia Mae Banbury).A Memorial Service will be held on May 6, 2017 at llam at the First Presbyterian Church located on 126 South Church Street, Bowling Green, Ohio, with a luncheon to follow at the Church. Interment will be at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Danville, Ohio. Date To Be Announced.
