Helen Tonkin

February 8, 1948 — September 24, 2025

Helen (Chase) Tonkin passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family and care-givers on September 24th, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald Tonkin and her parents George and Betty Chase.

Helen was a graduate of Geneva High School in New York. She furthered her education and ended with a Masters degree in Education. She taught preschool and 1st grade before becoming a licensed social worker and completing her years at the Sandusky county Board of DD. Helen was a large advocate for those with disabilities and wanted to make sure everyone had the services they needed and deserved. So many have succeeded in life because of her dedication and hard work to this field.

Helen was a dedicated woman of Christ in her life. She loved God and was involved in any church she attended. However, her home church was St. Paul’s Episcopalian Church. Helen also volunteered tirelessly for many local organizations. Just a few of those organizations include; Camp Fire Sandusky County, NAACP, Senior Center (Bridge group), Sandusky County Board of Elections, and many many more. Helen’s favorite things after retiring from work were going to church, playing bridge with her friends, wine on the porch with sunshine, and of course a good book!

Helen and Ron had two sons together. Thomas (Alexis) Tonkin and Robert (Christine) Tonkin. Helen and Ron fostered and mentored many children over the years which led to an honorary adopted son Lee Harvey. Helen devoted any spare time she had to making sure her grandchildren were always taken care of. She would send them cards, help them grow and learn, and make their favorite baked goods anytime they visited. Helen’s grandchildren include; Madison Tonkin, Cassidy Tonkin, Anthony Tonkin, Delaney Tonkin, Connor Tonkin, Allison Harvey, Wyatt Harvey, Gabriela McCurdy, Norah Bradford, and Thomas Tonkin. She had one great-grandchild Evelyn Lang. Helen is also survived by her loving sister, Ann Chase.

Helen will be missed most for her sense of humor and kind conversations. She was a pillar in this community and will live on through her family and countless friends.

A celebration of life will be held October 31st, 2025 at 1pm. The service will be hosted at St. Paul’s Episcopalian church 206 North Park Avenue.
