Heather Marie Karnowski

February 9, 1973 — August 23, 2025

Heather Marie Karnowski, age 52, of Toledo, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Heather was born on February 9, 1973, to Mark Lee and Amy Dauer. As the oldest sibling, she cherished time spent with her large family, including many siblings and cousins. During her teenage years, Heather found joy in modeling and fashion. Heather graduated from Macomber-Whitney in 1990. She was smart, possessed a vast vocabulary, and embodied the free spirit of the 1970s. Throughout her life, Heather was employed as a cosmetologist. Later, she worked for The Anne Grady Center and Tenneco, Inc. Heather’s hobbies ranged from reading and horticulture to watching true crime and attending concerts. Heather loved relaxing in her garden or by her pool, basking in the sun—slathered in coconut oil (or Crisco), with her favorite music playing.

Heather's kindness extended to all living creatures. She was always ready to help anyone in need and cared deeply for all children, wishing for a world where all children were safe and protected. She often sent food home with children to support themselves and their families. Known affectionately as “Aunt Heather” by her children’s friends and neighborhood kids, she was a caring figure to many, and her influence endured as these children returned to visit her, well into adulthood. Heather was an advocate for others, never hesitating to step in when needed. She valued family above all and loved sharing time at gatherings, frequently expressing pride in her children and loved ones. Heather treasured moments with her grandchildren, teaching them new things and spreading love. Her life’s purpose was to educate the young and to love and be loved. She will be remembered for heartfelt conversations, car karaoke, pool parties, and holiday celebrations.

Heather was preceded in death by her father, Mark Lee; aunts, Janis Stephenson, and Sylvia Rynieke; cousin, Janis Vera Todd-Slone, and her ex-husband, Thomas Karnowski. She is survived by her soulmate of 20 years, Matthew Cymbola; her children, Amanda (Justin) Dionyssiou, Zechariah Karnowski, Nicholas (Katelyn) Karnowski, Arriyanna (Rolando) Wertz, Emmett Cymbola; grandchildren, Noah, Aiden, Vada, Alora, and McCoy; her mother, Amy (Dennis) Peltier; siblings, Eric (Laura) Scarberry, Amanda Scarberry, Adam (Stacy) Scarberry, James (Xochitl) Mallory, Jacob (Desaree) Scarberry, Crystal (Scott) Hugo, and Felicia (David) Veilbaum; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended loved ones. Heather is also survived by her best friend of 25 years, Jennifer Worrell.

Honoring Heather’s wishes, the family will host a Celebration of Life instead of a traditional funeral service. The celebration will take place on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Maumee American Legion Post-320, located at 204 Illinois Ave., Maumee, Ohio 43537, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm. All are invited to attend, share memories, and celebrate Heather’s life. The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the University of Toledo Medical Center for their care and kindness throughout this difficult time.
