Greta Ullman

August 22, 1920 — September 21, 2018

Greta Ullman, 98, of Sylvania passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 21. A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, she was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Germany to Lewis and Bertha Owen. A veteran of the United States Army, Greta dedicated her life to the service of others. Her family delighted in her bustling nature as she filled her days with volunteer work with organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Mental Health Association and United Health Services. Her free time was spent brimming with activity – from knitting and crafting groups to church duties to dinner clubs. She was passionate about creativity and loved to spend afternoons at the Toledo Museum of Art. She took great joy in attending the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and instilled an affection for music in her children. As a lover of animals, Greta took great pride in gardening and the many creatures that would come to visit. Anyone who stepped into her home will remember her “owl collection,” more than 100 figurines from her travels that took her around the world. Her true talent was in the kitchen, where she excelled as a cook and later led lessons in the community. Her family will always hold on to her compassion for others, tireless efforts to improve the world around her, her resilience and quiet, playful sense of humor. Above all, they keep her incredible unconditional love near to their hearts. A private ceremony will be held for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made “In memory of Greta Ullman” to Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Toledo Museum of Art.
