Gregory S. Evans, Sr. (age 76) passed away peacefully at his home in Weston, Ohio on July 21, 2026, surrounded by family. Greg had spent the past two years fighting lymphoma and other health issues which were no longer treatable.

Greg was born on September 9, 1949, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Marie (Evans)Bundo. Greg spent his early life moving around the country with his mother and siblings, attending five high schools in four years. These included Cleburne high school in Cleburne, Texas, Coronado high school in Scottsdale, Arizona, one in Jacksonville, Florida and both Start and Scott high schools in Toledo, Ohio.

Greg had a paper route as a boy and worked at McDonalds as a teen. He moved back to Texas after graduation, where he met Patricia Bennett while working at Dairy Queen. Greg went on to work for General Dynamics, installing cockpit equipment in the F-111 swept wing fighter bombers. Greg and Pat married in 1969, relocating closer to family in Toledo. There they welcomed their first child, son Greg Jr. in 1970 and their lovely daughter Martha in 1971. Greg Sr worked at Jeep briefly before being hired at Libbey Owens Ford in Rossford, Ohio. He spent over 20 years at LOF before the production at the plant relocated out of state. All along, he worked hard and took on extra jobs remodeling and repairing property for family and friends alike. He often had to turn work down because he was in such demand. He tackled challenges head-on and with determination, the kind of spirit needed in his fight against cancer.

Greg Sr was fond of camping at Farnsworth Metropark with his family. Another favorite family vacation spot was Wilsons Mills, Maine. Greg and Pat bought an acre of property in the town in the early 1980’s and would camp on that property with a popup camper, enjoying nature and the mountains. After a layoff from work in 1983, Greg and a crew of four others (Greg Jr, James Bennett, Ric Mauder, and Gary Sigurdson), built a log home on that acre finishing the shell in just 7 weeks.

Greg Sr., a perfectionist, was not satisfied with his first building, so he purchased nine acres across the road and built a second home in 1996. This time, he improved on the original design, replacing the square, two-story log home (with gambrel roof) with a single-story, hexagonal log home featuring a wraparound porch. He used only five courses of logs and framed the walls above them, creating flat surfaces for hanging pictures. Greg and Pat built the second home themselves. Crafting the doors, cabinetry, moldings, boards, and logs from trees on the property.

Greg Sr served the town of Wilson’s’ Mills as a volunteer fireman, Constable, Assessor and Poll worker. He was the de facto hardware store for the town and all around fix it man. He had a gift for being able to see and understand how things work.

He was fond of saying “If man can make it, man can fix it- you just need to be willing to try.” Often whatever it was, he could, in fact, fix it. People who met him would not forget him. He spent his winters feeding the deer in his yard in Maine, often having up to two hundred at a time hanging around. Wild turkeys would also come in, often numbering dozens. His crowning achievement in woodworking was a cherry roll top desk made from trees on the property in Maine. He was so skilled that he tooled the wood to move without a fabric backing like knuckles. He was quite proud of it.

Greg Sr loved crossword puzzles and Sudoku, beer and bourbon, reading engineering manuals and physics books for fun. He was fond of motorcycles and cars, owning a Harley Davidson Sportster and DKW at different points along the way. He had a 1932 Packard, a 1966 Chevelle and a 1955 Thunderbird at one time or another during his life. The Chevelle was his last and favorite.

Greg Sr gave of his time, talent, and treasure throughout his life, helping those in need. He donated generously to the Salvation Army in Berlin, NH to support children and families at Christmas. Along the way he helped provide for family members in need, and friends alike. He spent several years of his life as a caretaker, first for the Damm family in Errol, NH, later for his brother Derek Evans and his mother Marie. Most recently, he lovingly cared for his wife Patricia.

Greg spent much more time with his family over the past four years enjoying his time with grandchildren, Connor, Morgan, Owynn Evans, Douglas Barney, and Taylor Phlegar (Jon). He also enjoyed his great grandchildren, Myles Evans and Luna Phlegar. He missed the arrival of his third great grandchild, Amelia Rose Phlegar, just over a week.

He is survived by Patricia Evans, his loving wife of 56 years; his children, Greg Jr. (Denise), Martha (Robert) Barney, his eldest brother, Mike (Pat) Evans, and his sisters, Martha (Tom) Ryan, Ann (Norman) Wasson, and sister-in-law Micki Evans. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tim (Micki), Derek Evans, and his mother Marie (Evans) Bundo.

Friends and family will be welcomed for a celebration of Greg’s life at 14527 Milton Rd in Weston, Ohio 43569 on Saturday August 8th from 12-5pm. There will be light food and potluck items available. Feel free to bring your favorite drink and story to Toast Greg.
