Gordon Alan Baker, age 66, passed away after a short battle with cancer on May 21, 2021. Born Nov. 16, 1954 to Gordon R. Baker and Mary J. (Lee) Baker in Rockford IL, Gordon grew up a country kid in Elkhorn, WI. He participated in the Boy Scouts, hunting, fishing, and working on the neighbors’ farm. He graduated from Elkhorn Area high school in 1972. Gordon was a proud Submariner, a 9-year veteran of the U.S. Navy spending his career under the sea on one of the early nuclear submarines, the USS Batfish. His role on the boat was that of Fire Control Technician. When the Captain of the boat said, “fire torpedo’s” Gordon was the guy who “pushed the button”. He worked with the nuclear electronics on the boat, repairing and servicing, as necessary. He received many awards and commendations while serving his country and once honorably discharged continued to work with nuclear computer systems as an instructor for the seamen now doing what he used to do. Always handy with repairs and remodeling he had his own business while living in Orlando, FL and after closing the business continued working in kitchen and bath remodeling, construction and building maintenance. He was currently employed at the Tamaron apartment complex as part of their maintenance team. Possessing a quick wit and dry sense of humor made Gordon a very funny and likable guy. Always ready to lend a hand and participate he would do anything asked of him and more. He often helped strangers anonymously; even paying for a gentleman’s groceries so that he did not have to put anything back. Gordon was an active member of the First Christian church of Sylvania serving as a trustee and a Deacon. He is preceded in death by his parents and his son Andrew M. Baker. He is survived by two daughters; Lauren Triana Baker of Fontana CA and Alexa M. Baker of Roscoe IL., his brother Steven M. Baker (Jacqueline) of Maple Plain MN and sister Sandra L. Sells (Patrick) of Toledo OH., along with his two favorite nephews Peter and Mitchell Baker and his favorite niece Amanda Hoffman and their families. Per Gordons wishes, there will not be a traditional funeral service; a Celebration of Life will be held later. The family requests any donations be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the First Christian church of Sylvania and wishes to thank all the nurses and doctors of Hospice. Your care and concern for your patients goes above and beyond. Gordon was taken from us too young and will be missed by all. The loss is immeasurable but so is the love left behind. Fly high brother, ‘til we meet again.
