George William Fitch, Jr.

George William Fitch, Jr. passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2009 of cancer at Lutheran Village at Wolf Creek, Holland, Ohio. He was 85 years old. He was born on November 24, 1923, outside of Adrian, Michigan, to Hilda & George W. Fitch, Sr. After attending college for a year, he was drafted into the army, during World War II. He was a Private First Class with the 15th Army Air Force, 1107th Army Air Force Basic Unit Caribbean Division Air Transport Command. He was decorated with numerous medals including the American Defense Service Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with a Silver Battle Star and two Bronze Battle Stars, among several others. He helped in supporting the air crews in southern and northern France, Rhineland, Po Valley, Ardennes, Northern Apennines, Rome and Arno campaigns. After the war he worked in various jobs in Ohio and California. Upon his return to the Toledo area he became employed with Teledyne CAE on Laskey Rd., and retired in 1985 after 29 years of employment as a Machinist. A few years later he moved to Murphy, North Carolina and lived there for several years until failing health brought him back to the Toledo area to live for the remainder of his life. He was a lifetime member to several VFW posts in northwest Ohio and North Carolina. He was also a member of the UAW Local 12 while employed at Teledyne.Surviving are his sister Alma (Martin) Abrams, daughters, Vickie (William) Litzenberg and Lori (Ross) Howell, his sons, George W. (Debbie) Fitch, III, David Fitch and Michael Fitch. He had 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.Funeral arrangements are private in accordance with the familys wishes. Contributions may be made in his memory to Lutheran Village at Wolf Creek or the American Cancer Society. The Cremation Society of Toledo is handling arrangements.
