Gary A. Counterman

Gary Allen Counterman, age 68, passed away on September 16, 2024, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Sylvania. Gary was born in Bowling Green, Ohio on December 10, 1955, the son of Walter and Mary (Williams) Counterman. He was raised in Toledo and was a 1973 graduate of Start High School.

Gary was known throughout the years as a local mixologist in the downtown Toledo area. He served many patrons within the local hotel chains, mainly the former Hilton on Byrne Road. In his free time, Gary enjoyed trips throughout the United States, his favorites being Washington DC, anywhere out West and into Canada. Horticulture was a practice which provided much peace throughout his life. He demonstrated love and service in everyday living, which was a direct reflection in his plants and longtime feline companion, Rex.

In his 40’s, Gary attended the University of Toledo where he studied art. His favorite mediums were painting, drawings and charcoal. He found much joy in expanding on his artistic abilities.

Gary is survived by sisters, Gail Quiroga and Gwen Skowronek; nieces and nephews, Shawn (Zhenya) McRae, Jennifer McRae, Dylan McRae, and Andrew Counterman; great nieces and nephews, Haley McRae, Kiley McRae and Aleksandra McRae. He was preceded by his parents; longtime partner, Michael Sullivan; brothers-in-law, Joe Quiroga and John Skowronek; and his beloved cat, Rex.

Gary’s wishes were to be cremated. He will be laid to rest at Wingston Pleasant View Cemetery in Wood County at a later date. Memorial contributions in Gary’s name may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
