Frederick Russell
Shea
Jun 24, 1947 — Jun 18, 2026
Frederick Russell” Fred” Shea passed away on June 18, 2026, peacefully after a courageous four-year battle with leukemia. Throughout his illness, he faced every challenge with remarkable strength, dignity, and determination. Fred was born on June 24, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, to Mr. and Mrs. Fred (Mary Jane Veller) Shea. He graduated from Bowsher High School, then was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country, receiving an honorable discharge following his service. He then began a distinguished 35-year career with Libbey Glass, where he retired. Later in life, he continued his dedication to service at the Toledo Museum of Art for twelve years.
Fred was known for his integrity, generosity, kindness, and unwavering work ethic. He approached every endeavor with pride and commitment. He enjoyed showing Great Danes, running marathons, bowling, golfing, building houses, and spending time with family and friends. A passionate craftsman, he especially enjoyed building and customizing golf clubs in his basement workshop, where he spent many happy hours perfecting his creations.
He was also a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, a loyalty that began when he was stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana, following Terry Bradshaw and his career. For decades, Fred proudly cheered on the Steelers, and this year he was able to attend his first game with his daughter, a memory he deeply cherished. Fred also had a special love for animals, especially his seven beloved cats. Most had been adopted and came to him with names of their own. Rather than settling on just one name for each, Fred would affectionately call them whatever seemed right that day, a habit that brought laughter to family and reflected the warmth, humor, and compassion he showed to all living things.
Though a private man, Fred left a lasting impression on everyone he met through his selfless spirit and genuine care for others. He is survived by his loving children, Brian Shea and Megan Shea; his beloved sister, Susan Rill; and his cherished seven cats, who brought him great companionship and joy. During his last final days his medical team, hospice, and nephew Eric Rill (Chris) helped navigate him to a peaceful transition. Fred’s legacy of strength, compassion, and integrity will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
"His light will forever shine and never be dimmed."
