Eugenia M. Zurat

January 15, 1932 — July 13, 2022

Eugenia Czerwiec Zurat, 90, transitioned into new life on July 13, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Julian Sr. and Eugenia Karpanty Czerwiec; her brother, Julian, Jr.; her nephew and godson, Tom Czerwiec; and her beloved best friend and cherished husband, Marius Andrew Zurat. She is survived by her niece, Pam Czerwiec Wolf, as well as her niece, Kay Czerwiec Maguire. Many great nieces and great nephews, as well as great great nieces and great great nephews will miss her, as well as many dear and close friends. Jeanne was born in Toledo in the Old Polish Village on January 15th, 1932 and attended St. Adalbert’s School. She graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1950. Jeanne lived a long, blessed, and enriching life with service to others as a primary and animating value in her career as a teacher, mentor, and volunteer. Throughout her life, her great devotion was to teaching. She obtained a BA in English and Education at Mary Manse College in Toledo. Jeanne pursued higher education in English as well as Theology and Religious Studies obtaining Master’s degrees in each from Marquette University and Fordham University. Her young years in teaching as a member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Tiffin, Ohio were at the intermediate and secondary levels. She taught in many of the elementary Catholic schools through the Diocese of Toledo including Tiffin High School. After a period of many years, in 1969 she worked in the Religious Education Office of the Toledo Diocese helping to organize the Resource Centers that served the people and parishes in the diocese. From 1971 to 1973, she was in charge of the Religious Education /Resource Center located in Shelby, Ohio at the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart that focused on Adult Education for twelve parishes in that area. Her great emphases in teaching at this time was the spirit and the teachings of the Vatican II Council and Scripture. In 1974, Jeanne married her best friend and soul mate Marius Zurat. For the next 31 years, they lived in Chicagoland and devoted their lives to teaching and opening others to the values and the teachings of Vatican II at the high school level, as well as in adult education. She also spent some time working with car fleet leasing companies as an office supervisor. They loved to travel and camp in the states and Europe. Together and individually, they also volunteered in many parish ministries and were active members of the Call to Action. Jeanne continued to do so for many years after her husband died in 2005. In 2007, Jeanne returned to Ohio. As a member of St. John XXIII Catholic Community, she continued in volunteering at the many ministries of the parish, such as St. Vincent DePaul, Baptism Retreats, Awakening Faith, Faith Alive, Helping Hands Soup Kitchen, Our Nest and Parish Funeral Luncheons. Jeanne was especially devoted to the ministry of Lector of the Word and leading faith sharing groups. She also gave time to tutor children at several schools. Other interests kept her life busy and active such as Bocce Ball, Pickle Ball, Book Club, Scrabble and gardening around her house. The Mass of Resurrection will be at St. John XXIII in Perrysburg at 24250 Dixie Highway on July 20, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. (live streamed at www.stjohn23.org). Visitation for friends and family will be before the Mass at 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass. Father Herb Weber will be the celebrant. A luncheon will be held at the parish after the Mass and burial of the cremains at Resurrection Cemetery, Toledo, Ohio.
