DuWaine Hoy, 90, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, died on February 22, 2012. DuWaine was a beloved veteran of World War II. He enlisted in the Navy in 1938 and served in the Pacific theater throughout the duration of the War. DuWaine was awarded seven medals, a Combat Action Ribbon, and nine battle stars for major battles, including the Battle of Midway. While aboard the U.S.S. Cimarron, an oiler, DuWaine served in support of the famous Doolittle Raid in April of 1942, refueling the task force before and after the raid, which was the first air raid by the United States to strike the Japanese Home Islands. The Raid provided a vital morale boost for the U.S. following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served aboard the U.S.S. Cimarron and the U.S.S. Iowa beginning with each of their commissionings and later enjoyed attending U.S.S. Cimarron and U.S.S. Iowa reunions. As part of the Veterans History Project, DuWaines WWII experiences were recorded and archived in the Library of Congress. DuWaine spent most of his post-Naval career working for the University of Michigan in the power plant, retiring after nearly 29 years. He was an avid golfer and had many friends at Huron Hills Golf Course. He is survived by his children, John Hoy, DuWaine Hoy Jr., Frank Hoy, Dianne Hoy; his grandchildren, John Michael Hoy (Bonnie), Shawn Hoy (Jennifer), Jeffrey Hoy, Ralph Hoy (Susan), Kristina Swanson (Brian), George Hoy; his great-grandchildren, Brendan, Grace, Christopher, Jack, and Gabrielle; and his sisters, Elinor Johnson, Lillian Jackson, and Esther Swinehart. He is also survived by his trusted aide and friend, Ashton Dasine; wife, Lolita, and daughters, Ashley and Emily. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Hoy (Irene); sister, Virginia VanDam, and long-time friend, Kay Lands. DuWaine will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery with military honors on March 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
