Dr. Cletus Uzogo Iwuagwu

October 2, 1954 — December 25, 2025

Dr. Cletus Uzogo Iwuagwu, age 71, passed away on December 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to others.

Born in Owerri, Nigeria, Cletus was the beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Otuonye Iwuagwu of Umuezea Offor. He began his education at Central School Amaekeudo Atta and Boys Secondary School Atta in Ikeduru. In the 1980s, he immigrated to the United States to pursue his dream of becoming a physician, supported by his only brother, the late Dr. Longinus Chimwem Iwuagwu.

Cletus earned his Bachelor of Science from Wilberforce University and completed medical school in the Dominican Republic. While working at Church’s Chicken in East Cleveland, he met the love of his life, Rebecca Pope. They married on March 4, 1986, and together built a beautiful family of seven children.

A proud Nigerian and devoted family man, Dr. Iwuagwu was a distinguished geriatrician at the University of Toledo Medical Center, where he served for 26 years as a physician, professor of medicine, and mentor. His medical career spanned hospitals across New York, Virginia, and New Jersey before settling in Toledo, Ohio. He was known for his tireless work ethic, often staying late into the night to ensure his patients received the best care possible.

Dr. Iwuagwu’s care extended far beyond clinical expertise—he healed with empathy, listened with patience, and uplifted with an infectious smile that could brighten the darkest day. His heart was immense, and he consistently placed the needs of others before his own. Whether in the office, nursing homes, hospice, or Senior Behavioral Health, his presence brought comfort and dignity to those he served.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Rebecca Iwuagwu; six loving daughters and their husbands, Kanisha (Mark) Byersmith, Quianna (Ryan) Walker, Krystal (Ryan) Tyhulski, Monique (Kyle) Keller, Monica (Joseph) Lynch, and Antoinette (Tevin) Williams; and ten cherished grandchildren, Brooklyn, Elijah, Jack, Benjamin, Noelle, Roman, Brielle, Kendall, Avery, and Akorah.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Christian (Vittoria) Iwuagwu, whose memory remains a source of strength and unity for the family.

Dr. Cletus Iwuagwu’s life was a testament to perseverance, faith, and love. He will be remembered for his humility, dependability, and the quiet power of putting others first. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, his patients, and the countless lives he touched.

The family will not be holding a funeral service, but they extend heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered love, support, and prayers during this time of remembrance.
