D. Joan Derrick, of Holland, Ohio, passed away on the evening of April 8, 2012 at Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania. Joan was born on July 20, 1932 to Beatrice and Gilbert J. Urban. She graduated from Woodward High School and attended The University of Toledo. She was united in marriage to James E. Derrick on May 19, 1951, and traveled with her husband during his tour of service with the U.S. Coast Guard. She worked for Star-Kist Foods, Terminal Island, CA, The Boeing Company, Seattle, WA, and the U.S. Navy in Kodiak, AK. Returning to Toledo, she worked for Attorney Steven L. Markowski. She was one of the first MCO employees hired by Ms. Annabelle Isaacs. Joan worked for R.M. Watterson, Librarian, and was excited to be a part in the planning and building of the Raymon H. Mulford Library, and started the MCO Bookstore and Visual Education Department. Joan retired as Assistant to the Librarian in 1993. Surviving are her husband, James, sisters and brother-in-laws, Mary Alice Blessing, Doris Morris, Shirley (William) Bartkavage, Jean (Robert) Baker, Martha (William) Strayer, and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was proud of her loving family. Joan loved decorating, entertaining, antiques, and fine art. She was an avid fundraiser and devoted time and energy to many organizations. She was a member of Palestine Chapter No. 51 O.E.S., and Zion United Methodist Church, Toledo. The family extends special thanks to her many friends who supported her during her illness. A memorial service will be held at Zion United Methodist Church, 2600 Copland Blvd, Toledo at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012 with visitation on hour prior to the service. Memorials may be sent to Zion United Methodist Church.
