Darryl "Stretch" Berning

Darryl, better known as Stretch, was born to Amelia “Babe” (Rothenbuhler) and Norman Berning on August 28, 1939. He took his final breath on November 13, 2023. He left this world peacefully in his sleep while receiving exceptional care at Hospice of NWO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings, Gwendolyn Mennitt, Carol Carver, Richard Berning, Robert Berning; and stepson, Kenneth Carter. Surviving are his daughters, Melanie (Scott) Berning-Nowak, Cynthia Berning, Dee (Dan) Wagner, Darlene (John) Eichner; stepson, Steven Carter; and former wives, Marcia Thompson and Doris Hilkens; grandchildren, Ashleigh (Brian), Jeremy (Isobel), Austin, Hayden, Nicole (Nick), Sarah (Mitch), Kenny, Katrina (Adam), Alisha, Heather, Brandon, Sareena, Jenna, Joshua, as well as numerous great-grandchildren.

Stretch was a graduate of Scott High School, Class of 1957. In his earlier years, he was employed at Wonder Bread as a delivery driver, then went on to pursue a career as a skilled heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) installer.

Darryl enjoyed photography, bowling, and golfing. He was meticulously passionate about collecting coins, stamps, and antiques. He also loved tinkering with anything he could take apart and put back together. We dare not lay him to rest without acknowledging the love he had for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Rarely, would you see him not sporting his team colors of scarlet and grey. A recent highlight of his life, was attending a game at “the Shoe”.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Otterbein of Monclova and Hospice of NWO for the loving care they provided our father during his final days.

A service will be held in his honor at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, 4210 W. Central Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43606 on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11:00 am (please arrive by 10:45 for line up at front gate.)
