Charles “Chuck” Ray Watson, 77, of Defiance, Ohio, passed away at home on August 24, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Chuck was born June 7, 1949, in Mannington, West Virginia, in the area known as Warriors Fork, to Mary Evelyn Watson. He was born at home and delivered by his grandmother, Estella Belle Watson—a fitting beginning for a man whose life would take him far beyond those West Virginia hills and through more chapters than most people ever knew. Even those closest to him were still learning the stories of the places he had been, the things he had done, and the life he had lived.

As a teenager, Chuck moved from West Virginia to Ravenna, Ohio. He had always wanted to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army at just 17 years old. He served in Vietnam, where he was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart. Following his active-duty service, he transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve. His love of country and pride in his military service remained an important part of who he was throughout his life.

Chuck attended Defiance College and went on to live a life that could never be described as ordinary. He worked undercover in narcotics, served as a police officer, and later became Chief of Police in Paulding, Ohio, during the late 1970s and early 1980s. After leaving police work, Chuck also spent time doing detective and private investigative work, including operating his own small investigative business for a period of time.

Eventually, Chuck traded investigative work for the open road and became a long-haul truck driver, a career that would span more than 40 years. Between military service, law enforcement, investigative work, and decades spent behind the wheel, Chuck accumulated a lifetime of experiences, each one adding another chapter to a life that was anything but ordinary.

Chuck and Bonnie (Schnell) Watson shared 50 years of marriage and built a life and family together. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and his family remained an important part of his life.

Those who knew Chuck knew he appreciated the simple things: watching a good Western, cheering on the Cleveland Browns, drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, hunting, and spending time with the people and animals he loved. He was strong-willed, complicated, fiercely independent, had a sense of humor all his own, and was unapologetically himself.

Chuck believed strongly in the importance of a person’s character and often reminded his children that “your reputation is the only thing you have, so protect it.” He also had another piece of unmistakably Chuck advice: “Just say no to dumbass ideas.”

In the end, Chuck went out the way he wanted—at home, surrounded by family, with The Lone Ranger playing on the television.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Evelyn McDougal; his sisters, Sharon Cottrill and Vickie Griffith; his brother, Rob McDougal, all of West Virginia; and his son, Scott Williams of Defiance, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bonnie Watson of Defiance; his children, Christopher Watson of Defiance, Jamie (Ryan) Huber of Defiance, and Michael-Scott (Amanda) Watson of Paulding; his grandchildren, Cody, Dylon, Gabe, Brayden, Alayna, Jonathan, Alivia, Lucas, Landyn, Tatum, and Zoey; his great-granddaughter, Sailor; his brothers, Donnie and Dave McDougal of West Virginia; and many extended family members and friends.

A private family ceremony with military honors will be held at a later date, with arrangements to be determined.
