Brian Letherby I

August 31, 1956 — September 6, 2025

Brian Cullen Letherby I, age 69, passed away peacefully at home on September 6, 2025, after a courageous three and half year battle with colon cancer. Born on August 31, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa, to John and Rosemary (Cullen) Letherby,

Brian grew up as an "Army Brat", living in many places during his childhood, including a memorable time in Germany during the 1960s. He spent many years in Muscatine, Iowa, his mother’s hometown, before his family moved to Toledo. He attended Rogers High School where he graduated in 1974. Brian met the love of his life, Rose (Grothaus), in 1976 and later married in April of 1978. Brian and Rose enjoyed traveling and hosting lively gatherings, before later embracing the joy of raising two wonderful children.

Brian built a long and steady career working in shipping and receiving with several trucking companies, the University of Toledo, Lott Industries and others before retiring in 2020. Outside of work Brian found joy in music. He especially loved rock and roll, both eclectic and traditional. Over the years Brian attended countless concerts, one of his most memorable being The Kinks live in Colorado. Brian was an avid trivia buff and rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy. He appreciated a good, imported beer, enjoyed playing darts, horseshoes, and golf, and loved watching his favorite college football teams (Michigan State, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Toledo Rockets). Overall, Brian cherished time spent with family and friends most.

Brian was proceeded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Jim and Agnes Grothaus. Brian is survived by his devoted wife and best friend Rose; son, Brian Cullen (Torrie) Letherby II; daughter, Alison (Nick) Mikolajczyk; and grandson, Brian Cullen Letherby III. He also leaves behind his sisters, Beth Letherby Krasovec and Barbara Letherby; sister-in-law, Sandy (Grothaus); and brother-in-law, Charlie Reese; as well as seven nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Mercy Perrysburg Cancer Center for their support throughout his journey, and to Heartland Hospice for their kindness and care during Brian's final days.

A celebration of Brian's life will held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Club 16, 316 S. King Rd., Holland, OH from 12-4pm. Final arrangements are being made by Cremation Society of Toledo.

Interment at Toledo Memorial Park will be private.

Brian will be remembered most for his infinite love of music, his sharp wit, and his warmth and loyalty to the people he loved.
