Betty Jean Schaetzke

November 15, 1930 — October 28, 2021

Betty Jean (Schumacher) Schaetzke 90 years old, passed peacefully on October 28th at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, with loved ones at her side. Betty was an only child, born to Clarence and Dorothy (Sutton) Schumacher on November 15, 1930. After graduating from Libbey High School, she attended Mary Manse School of Nursing. Betty met her future husband, Frank, in 1949 on Lake Erie where both their parents had cottages in Luna Pier, Michigan. They married on May 6, 1950 at Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church, where they became lifelong members. Frank and Betty made their home in Rossford, Ohio where they raised their four children and spent summers in Luna Pier, Michigan to be near family. Many memories of the “Lake” became more special as the years passed; Memorial Day Fish Fry, 4th of July picnics with neighbors and family, nights playing Pinnocle and Eucre, and visits with life-long friends. Betty was the ultimate homemaker and lived for her family. She collected cookbooks and loved trying and sharing recipes, enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables from Frank’s extensive garden, especially her chili sauce. An excellent seamstress, Betty made beautiful clothes for her daughters and later, for her granddaughters. She knitted and crocheted baby blankets and outfits for many, and spent countless hours babysitting her grandchildren. It was all truly a labor of love. As former President of Eagle Point Elementary Mother’s Club, Betty was always supportive and involved in her children’s activities. Her sarcasm, quick wit and anecdotes will be missed by family and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, brothers-in-law Howard and James Schaetzke, grandson John Gallagher, and sons-in-law Larry Gordon and Bill Moll. Surviving Betty, are her children Cathy Gordon, Karen Fitzgerald, Frank (Nancy) Schaetzke and Kim Moll; grandchildren Kelly (Brad) Rynearson, Elizabeth Schaetzke, Frank (Tanya) Schaetzke and their children Mason and Teagan, Kathryn (Brandon) Zimmerman, Brent Thompson and Ben Thompson; great-grandsons Case Rynearson, Jacob Thompson and Francis Zimmerman; sisterz-in-law Mary Lou and Audene Schaetzke. She also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews she loved very much. A special thanks to Hospice In-Home Care staff, especially Jessica and Wendy. Most of all, thank you, Kim who devoted the last few years to Betty, not only as her loving daughter, but as her main caregiver. Per Betty’s wishes, services and interment will be private with her final resting place at Fort Meigs Cemetery, Perrysburg, Ohio. Any contributions to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church of East Toledo, would be greatly appreciated.
