Betty is at peace after losing her courageous 6-year battle with ovarian cancer on Saturday, July 17. She was born May 12, 1932. Betty and her husband Charlie Fleming owned the former Coopers Restaurant,at Put-in-Bay,where she worked for many years prior to moving to Toledo. She retired from Dillards where she had many wonderful life-long friends from their days at The Lion Store at Southwyck. She was a long-time member of the Black Swamp Woodcarvers club and a very talented craftsperson. She is survived by her five children: Pam (Dave) Courtney, Jack (Randi) Wertenbach, Patricia Anderson, Elden (Kelly) Wertenbach and Jim (Jeanne) Wertenbach; sister, Irene (Bud) Ohlemacher; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Wertenbach; parents, Elden and Alma Hales; husband, Charles Fleming; former husband, Warren Kinsey and sisters, Jean Langnecker and Carol Hales. At her request, there will be no funeral service. Her ashes will be interred at Put-in-Bay at a later date. Rather than mourn her death, Betty would want her loved ones to celebrate her great love of life and her kindness. As she told us often, “its later than you think”. Betty will be remembered as a loving mother and a great friend. She loved life, shopping and trips to the casinos. The family wishes to the Dr. G. Mark Burton and the Toledo Clinic staff and Odyssey Hospice for their great care. Special thanks go to her daughter, Pat, for making her wish to stay at home come true. Donations may be made to American Cancer Society in her memory. Online condolences may be shared below:
